Lay Your Foundation

Alice in Wonderland said to the Cheshire Cat who was sitting on a tree branch, “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where —” said Alice.

Indeed. That is exactly where many of us are much of the time, scurrying busily on our way to somewhere else, a nebulous place defined best by being ‘not here.’ While it can be pleasant or even wise to sometimes just ‘go with the flow,’ if this is our habit we are allowing someone else’s agenda to direct our lives—we are reacting rather than taking action. We can do better. Yes, we must work with the current, but use it to get you where you want to go. We are advancing in our journey, seeing clearly now and dealing honestly with the past and the present. Let’s get down to business. We know that we want positive change and our desire is strong. What comes next?

You’ve probably heard this catchy phrase: “Plan your work, and work your plan.” Variations of it are attributed to a number of the world’s most accomplished people who keep saying it because, as time has proven, it works. It sounds simple enough, but like so many gems of wisdom, it is easy to say and much harder to do. But it can be done, and in some form is necessary to fulfill any objective. There’s no getting around it; building anything significant requires forethought and some kind of a plan. Simple or complex, there are many ways to accomplish this. All begin with a foundation.

A foundation is the base upon which everything that follows is built. Its correctness is crucial. In a building, for instance, if the foundation is faulty, it doesn’t matter how stunning the architecture is or how dazzling the materials used, if the foundation is not right the structure may be impressive for a time but it will not endure. It is the same in our lives. Thankfully the architecture of our lives is not made of steel and concrete, we can adjust and make improvements as we go along. In fact, growth requires that we do.

When asked what they want, many people would immediately respond, “I want to be a multi-millionaire!” or “I want to be famous!” Or perhaps, “I want a Lamborghini—red!” There is nothing wrong with wanting and having these. On their own they are neutrals with the potential to be used for any purpose. Yet the glittering goals of worldly success—wealth, status, power, fame—are powerful lures to be approached with caution. Everything has a price, so it is important in the pursuit of any goal to be aware of what might be required. If along the way we develop addictions or habits that damage health or lives, there will be regrets. If we lose integrity, if the price demanded is our character, we sacrifice something far more precious than anything we can gain.
